PEOPLE OF THE HIGHWAY

You see them in the early morning
Sunrise is their daily warning
They’re only in the corner of your eye
You only spy them in the distance
Because at their own insistence
They keep moving, don’t ever ask them why

All the people on the highway
With no place to call their own
All the people on the highway
Each journey begins alone

When you lose the things you love
Reality takes off the gloves
In the end we’re all out on our own
The door is locked, why stand and wait?
Get pulled into useless debate
And wake up at night confused and all alone

The people of the highway
Never feel another’s touch
The people of the highway
Have already felt too much

Young man with a broken heart
His dreams have just all come apart
Friends and family all left far behind
Now he lives a nomad’s life
Still dreaming dreams his only vice
Strangers think he has lost his mind

All the people on the highway
Some are young and some are old
All the people on the highway
Trying to forget what they’ve been told

Have you seen the silhouette
Of a young girl smoking cigarettes?
She won’t see you as you pass her by
Bitterness her only bread
Forming reasons in her head
Can’t stop to catch anybody’s eye

All the people on the highway
In their eyes a setting sun
People on the highway
Someday all will be as one

Seekers on the pilgrim’s trail
Driven by an ancient tale
Told long ago by men who lie
Still believe in fairy tales
Forever chasing holy grails
It’s still better to be among those who tried

All the people on the highway
With no place to call their own
The people on the highway
Begin their search alone

There’s a restlessness across the land
People move like blowing sand
Not everyone sees dreams come true
Some are pushed out far beyond the edge
Some standing perched out on a ledge
After nourishing what never grew

All the people on the highway
Their eyes a setting sun
The people on the highway
Someday all will be as one
